What is Diwali or Deepawali?
The sign of victory & the festival of light is called Diwali. And today we are celebrating Diwali.
Diwali, or Dipawali, is India’s biggest and one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism. The festival can be marked by lights by Indians outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness.
Why is Diwali celebrated?
Diwali, is one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. Here are the reasons why all these religions celebrate this festival of lights?
Diwali festival in Hinduism
According to Holy Hindu Epic Ramayana, This Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Laxmana to Ayodhya after spending 14 years in exile & the victory of finally and defeating the demon king Raavana. Diwali marks his (Lord Rama) Victory & their return to his home.
Birth and Holy marriage of Mata Lakshmi
And also that, according to the most popular tradition in Hinduism, Diwali is also celebrated as the day Goddess Lakshmi was born from Samudra Manthan, the churning of the cosmic ocean of milk by the gods and demons. Lakshmi chose Vishnu as her husband on the night of Diwali, and the two were bonded in holy matrimony.
Diwali in Sikhism
In Sikhism, Diwali is known to the event related to release of Guru Hargobind’s by Mughal emperor Jehangir.
Jainism’s relation to Diwali
According to the study, in Jainism, this festival of Diwali is celebrated to commemorate the anniversary of Mahavira’s soul finally attaining Nirvana.
